Chapter Two, Glacier National Park…

“About 6:30 the next morning, I was awoken by the truck shaking violently up and down. Someone was getting in.

“Is someone stealing my truck?” I thought still half asleep. I opened my eyes to see the face of a black bear who had climbed on the rear bumper and was peering through the back window of the cab. His snout was pressed up against the same pane of glass my toes were touching. I jumped awake, bolting upright, gasped, and then laughed incredulously. It was a comical sight. The bear looked like a human standing on his hind legs peering in through the glass, but he wasn’t all that big. It was much less scary than if I had seen a human peering in the window. When the little guy saw me he backed off immediately. I opened the window to look at him for a few moments before he left. I wasn’t scared or threatened, he was scared of me. He was actually pretty cute, reminding me of a big raccoon.”

The rude awakening got me going early. I drove into Glacier National Park for the first time and was blown away with the impressive mountains I saw. They were showy, naked rock, striped with snow and perfectly reflected in the still waters of the Two Medicine Lake. I took off into them but was completely unprepared when a storm blew in…
